French-speaking mayors are committed to the protection of the environment
At the end of their meeting, they adopted a number of resolutions, including the prohibition of all activities in areas at risk.
Four axes are at the center of the recommendations issued from the subregional seminar of the International Association of Francophone Mayors (AIMF) on the theme: “Central African cities and climate change”. Meeting that took place in Douala, Cameroon, from 23 to 25 June 2014. First axis, to know the evolution of climate parameters at the local scale. This involves training elected officials and managers in setting up and monitoring projects, and in collaboration with specialized institutes for data collection and analysis.
Second, environmental risks should be known. Hence the need to prohibit the occupation of risk areas, to set up a monitoring system, and to encourage the reforestation of sensitive areas with species adapted to local conditions. Mayors also agreed on the need to develop lowlands, to create gardens or market garden activities, to intervene on aggravating factors such as bush fires, to limit felling, to introduce environmental taxes, to develop community adaptation strategies and to encourage the participation of populations and associations.
Another point debated is that of governance. The aim is for the countries of the sub-region to plead with Governments and Parliamentarians in order to create budget lines dedicated to climate change. Finally, we must raise awareness in schools by including a whole program on climate. In his closing speech on Wednesday, the Government Delegate to the Douala Urban Community, Fritz Ntonè Ntonè, thanked the participants from Cameroon, Chad, the Central African Republic, Gabon, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe, Sao Tome and Principe, the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as partner private structures. The next meeting of the members of this association is scheduled for the end of the year.
