Fight against deforestation in East Cameroon: the digital tools Forest Watcher and Geo ODK Collect put to use
Since January 2020, it has been easy for nationals of the villages Ouami, Déoulé, Lom Pangar, Deng Deng and Kambo-Cassi in the East Cameroon region to monitor the forest cover in Deng Deng National Park. They received training in the use of digital tools for monitoring forest cover, organized by the Service d'Appui aux Initiatives Locales de DéVELOPPEMENT (SAILD). A field survey was carried out to document GLAD deforestation alerts (Global Land Analysis & Discovery, a tool that accelerates the rapid dissemination of information in favor of the conservation and protection of the forest canopy) issued by Global Forest Watch in and around Deng Deng National Park.
Each community received a smartphone equipped with the Forest Watcher and Geo ODK Collect mobile applications, which are effective in monitoring deforestation. Forest Watcher makes it possible to follow the evolution of forests, even without an Internet connection. The application also makes it possible to observe forest loads in a specific area, by viewing deforestation alerts issued through satellites and navigating to these alert points to investigate and gather information on the drivers of deforestation. According to SAILD, Forest Watcher is very practical, especially in rural areas, given the poor Internet connectivity. For its part, Geo ODK Collect allows you to fill in cases of deforestation and degradation observed using a form available in the application. It also makes it possible to feed the database of the System for Monitoring Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Cameroon (2S2D).
