National Assembly: Two bills introduced

48 hours after the opening of the second regular session of the 2014 legislative year, things went very quickly. Thus, the Conference of Presidents of the Chamber, under the leadership of the Right Honourable Cavaye Yeguié Djibril, considered the texts admissible, hence their presentation during the plenary session which followed some time later.

The second text received last Friday by the deputies is the bill authorizing the President of the Republic to adhere to the Nagoya Protocol on access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use, adopted on October 29, 2010 in Nagoya, Japan. The Nagoya Protocol aims to regulate the exploitation of genetic resources under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the management of the benefits associated with their use. It aims to valorize the traditional knowledge and genetic resources of a country. The said protocol also aims to stimulate the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, as well as the increase in the contribution of biological diversity to sustainable development and well-being.

This piece of legislation was defended before the Foreign Affairs Committee last Saturday.
