OWSD Early Career Scholarships for Women Scientists (ECWS)

Call for applications

All the information you need to write your call for applications is available below, you can also download it by clicking here. The Early Career Scholarship for Women Scientists (ECWS) is a prestigious award of up to 50,000 US dollars, reserved for women who have completed a Doctorate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, (STEM), and who work at a scientific research institution or at a university in one of the countries listed in the Least Developed Countries in Science and Technology (STLCs) list. Recipients of the ECWS grant will be encouraged to continue their research internationally while staying at their home institutes, and to create research groups that can attract international visitors.

All applications must be submitted online.

The official language of the call for applications is English. For the Call for Applications in English, click here.

Please note that the candidate MUST NOT have received an active research grant or scholarship from the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and MUST NOT have applied for a TWAS scholarship program in the same year. Each candidate can only submit one application per year regardless of the TWAS or OWSD scholarship program. Candidates will also not have the right to visit another institute as part of the TWAS Visiting Professor programmes.

An exception is provided for the OWSD-Elsevier Foundation awards (as the nomination is submitted by a nominator). In addition, a Director who invites a specialist under the TWAS Visiting Professor programmes may still apply to another TWAS/OWSD programme.

The call for applications for the year 2019 is open.

The winners of the grants will be notified by October 2018 and they will have to participate in a first workshop in Trieste, Italy, in December 2018. The duration of each scholarship will be two years from the date of acceptance.

Objective

The ECWS scholarship program is managed by the OWSD with funds generously allocated by the International Development Research Center (IDRC), Canada.

The specific objectives of ECWS grants are as follows:

1. Empowering women receiving ECWS grants to become leaders in major research projects with practical applications for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including strengthening relationships with industry.

2. Development of the necessary leadership and entrepreneurial skills of ECWS awardees in order to disseminate and capture research results and build careers.

3. Building a network of exceptional women scientists who can mentor future generations of women leaders in STEM.

These objectives complement the general long-term goals of the OWSD programme in general, as set out below:

1. Increase the relevance and implementation of scientific research projects developed by women in STLC countries to meet the economic, social, health and research requirements of their country of origin.

2. Increase the number of women scientists from STLC countries and living in their country of origin in order to pursue their scientific/industrial careers, and thus contribute to research training and development.

3. Strengthen the research, resources and expertise of institutes in STLC countries.

ECWS scholarship support

The ECWS grant lasts for two years and corresponds to a sum of up to 50,000 US dollars to enable beneficiaries to maintain their research at an international level, as well as to create collaborations and partnerships with the industrial sector and the private sector.

Attention, the ECWS grant does not provide any salary for the beneficiaries, their home institute must provide for it. However, ECWS grants can cover the assistance costs that the candidate will have to bear for teaching services that are not directly related to her research work so that she can devote herself to her research at an international level.
The aim is to develop a specialized research center recognized at the national, regional or international level, which will therefore be able to attract world-renowned researchers. Learn more
