The State helps populations living near protected areas

Since 1994, the Cameroonian State has adopted a new forest and wildlife policy. This law aims to further involve local populations and decentralized local authorities in the sustainable management of natural resources. The participatory management of these natural resources by these stakeholders is motivated by the retrocession of lease taxes in northern Cameroon and forest royalties in the southern part.

In North Cameroon, all the amounts of money received by the State from areas rented to professional hunting guides are distributed as follows: to neighbouring communities (10%), to municipalities (40%) and to the public treasury (50%).

Areas of hunting interest allow decentralized local authorities and coastal communities to benefit from lease taxes, which offer them the opportunity to carry out social works for the benefit of communities, among other things, or to carry out actions that facilitate the sustainability or conservation of wildlife.

This year, 8 municipalities and 41 coastal communities in the northern region received a total of 64,958,158 FCFA including 51,647,060 FCFA for the municipalities and 13,311,098 FCFA to the coastal communities.

The ceremony was chaired by Ms. Koulsoumi Alhadji, spouse Boukar, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife. The Governor of the North Cameroon Region, representatives of the security forces and local officials of services in charge of the sustainable management of natural resources took part in this important meeting.
