Research internship report 'Analysis of the possibilities of realizing the concept of sustainable ecological tourism in protected areas in Cameroon - Kribi, Cameroon.

This document relates to a research internship report that took place from May 18 to June 10, 2000 at the Campo Ma'an Project. Its objective is to determine the possibilities of achieving sustainable ecological tourism in protected areas in Cameroon. It refers to the collection of data that was based on the exploitation of literature, maps and various reports, observations on the ground, inventories of tourist resources, discussions with the heads of the institutions and organizations concerned (State, institutions and non-governmental organizations, institutions and non-governmental organizations, private companies, etc.). Surveys and interviews were also conducted with local populations, tourists and economic operators. Surveys of local populations were carried out in the villages of Ebianemeyong, Nko'élon, Mabiogo and Ebodjé. It also mentions tourism, which is a source of income for local populations and the State. The money derived from tourism comes from various taxes, services, sales of all kinds, etc. In 1998/ 1999, the turnover recorded in the tourism sector in the Southern Province amounted to 596.6 million CFA francs. The costs of providing services (guides, catering, accommodation, etc.) vary from one village or client to another. The guide fee is 5,000 FCFA/day in Ebianemeyong against 1,000 to 1,500 FCFA in Ebodjé. This study was financed by the SNV (Eco-Development Component). The satisfaction is the great diversity of fauna (elephants, buffaloes, gorillas and elephants) and flora, the diversity of the landscape (vegetation, relief, hydrography, waterfalls and islands). The disadvantages concern the lack of infrastructure and health personnel, the increase in prostitution in Kribi, the absence of accommodation or catering establishments in the four villages. The recommendations relate to the harmonization of prices for services, the compensation of losses to the local population due to the creation of the Campo-Ma'an National Park, the definition of a code of conduct for both tourists and local populations, the strengthening of the tourism capacities of local populations and the village tourism committee.
