New measures to fight poaching in South Cameroon
Plan the implementation of the National Plan to Combat Poaching on the ground; better raise awareness, train and inform opinion leaders; and institutionalize punches in markets for the sale of poaching products. These are some of the measures taken during the session of the Regional Committee to Combat Poaching in the South Cameroon Region, which was held on 30 December 2013 in the city of Ebolowa.
An unequivocal observation was made during this session: the phenomenon of illegal exploitation of wildlife resources is taking on worrying proportions in this region of southern Cameroon. A phenomenon observed at the level of all social strata. Major areas of poaching have also been identified. These are the Dja Biosphere Reserve; the Campo-Ma'an National Park; the Kom National Park and the Mengame gorilla sanctuary.
However, the local authorities have waged a merciless campaign against the phenomenon of poaching. Thus, during 2013, decisive operations made it possible to seize nearly 36 tusks and numerous protected animal species at the hands of poachers; the number of patrols was multiplied and 36 awareness-raising sessions were conducted across the region. It is now a question of strengthening and increasing these patrols.
