Cameroon wants to curb fraudulent fishing
A convention to combat “illegal, unreported and unregulated” fishing was signed on 26 December 2013 between the Cameroonian Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries and the Ministry of Defence. This convention consists in protecting fishing areas, the actors in this activity and their property, along the coastline of Cameroon.
This initiative is mainly that of the Ministry in charge of Fisheries, which called on the defense forces for the sustainable protection of food security and more generally of the Cameroonian economy due to the weakness of its resources, explained to the press, the minister in charge of fisheries. Also speaking to journalists, his Defence counterpart gave every assurance that the French Navy will hunt down all fraudsters in the maritime zone.
Out of the 360 kilometers affected by illegal fishing in the Cameroonian hydrographic network, fishery products are exploited for unknown destinations. This while Cameroon is forced to import resources from the sea to make up for its deficiencies. Support from the navy against fraudsters can help turn the tide, suggested Minister Taïga.
